empathy

This week’s show comes to us from a link shared on Twitter by @studioanisa (Thanks Anisa!) It’s an interview from the Harvard Business Review entitled:

Putting Yourself in the Customer’s Shoes Doesn’t Work: An Interview with Johannes Hattula

We did a whole show on empathy and how important it is for product designers to be empathetic, and it’s interesting that there’s some research to suggest that this may not be the best idea.

Here’s the link: https://hbr.org/2015/03/putting-yourself-in-the-customers-shoes-doesnt-work

It’s a short read, so don’t be afraid to click that link.

Simply put, politeness is required for better experiences with software. We enter a relationship with the products and services that we use, and if that relationship is not good, negative, or rude, we just won’t keep it around.

This week, Chris & Jon discuss the differences between polite and impolite software, and how it affects the user experience! Believe it or not, politeness matters, so stick around and listen!

This week on the Design Review: we discuss the principle of No UI and whether or not the best interface really is no interface.

Golden Krishna, now a designer at Google, wrote a short essay (and subsequently a book) on this topic, though he admits that it was inspired by other stuff written by pioneers like Don Norman and Mark Weiser of Xerox PARC.

Here’s the link:

Scott Berkun, author and speaker on creativity, philosophy, and culture, wrote a rebuttal to the whole No UI movement. Here’s a link:
